A good oral health routine can be very overwhelming to follow with everything on social
media, as oral health professionals we want to educate you on a good overall oral health
routine! Firstly, you should brush twice a day for at least two minutes at a time, using
circular motions, following a 45-degree angle towards the gum line. Ensure to reach all
surfaces of all teeth. Use an electric brush with a round head, or a soft to medium bristle brush. Toothbrushes should be ideally changed every 3 months, or when the bristles begin to splay.
Your toothpaste should have a minimum of 1450ppm sodium fluoride in, and we should avoid rinsing with water or mouthwash after spitting our toothpaste out. If you want to use mouthwash in your routine, use before brushing or a separate time of day.
We should use an interdental cleaning method such as floss or interdental brushes. Everyone has different sized gaps between their teeth, and therefore need different interdental brush sizes, a brush should feel like a snug fit, without having to force it through. Floss should be used in gaps that the smallest interdental brush does not fit. This should ideally be done 1-2 times a day, and should take around 3-5 minutes, to ensure each gap is being thoroughly cleaned. We recommend doing this before brushing, to remove the plaque stuck between teeth, and then allow the fluoride in the toothpaste to reach these gaps.
These general steps create a great oral hygiene routine that will help towards preventing oral disease!
